Much of the science used by the ancient Inca civilization to produce fine alpaca fiber has been lost. We know that the fiber produced by those long ago animals was finer than anything we have today because we have studied cloth found in the tombs of Incan royalty. However, breeders today have already made great progress in improving the quality of fiber produced by today's alpacas. This improvement can only continue if breeders educate themselves in genetics and practice selective breeding. There are many knowledgeable experts who have written extensively on the subjects of breeding and fiber. We offer a few of those articles for you to peruse.
